Plan a Sensible Route

Use the PBSC app or our System Map to plan the route to your destination in advance. Use bike lanes when available.

Adjust the seat to your height, check the brakes for resistance, and ensure both tires are inflated before you start riding.

Always Wear a Helmet

All riders should wear a helmet at all times with chin strap secured. Helmet use is mandatory for 16 and 17 year old riders.

Use Hand Signals

Extend your arm out and point in the direction you are planning to turn. To signal you are stopping, drop your left arm straight down.

Yield to Pedestrians

Bicyclists are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections.

Stay off Sidewalks

Sidewalks are for pedestrian traffic only. When on the sidewalk, make sure you walk with your bike.

Bicyclists must ride in the same direction of traffic as cars and use a bike lane when available.

Obey Traffic Signals

Bicyclists must obey all traffic lights and signs. Not only is this the law, but these rules are in place to keep you safe!

Cycling Laws

The Highway Traffic Act highlight the rules for cyclists and other vehicles to travel safely and predictably on City streets. The City of Toronto has By-Laws that regulate the safe use of different cycling infrastructure throughout the City.
